For Faculty Search Committees

Transforming science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) departments is imperative to attract and retain a highly talented and diverse workforce and to foster women’s leadership.  The Departmental Transformation initiative has three objectives:

  • Help faculty understand why diversity makes for good science and a more rewarding place to work.
  • Increase the number of STEM women faculty.
  • Change departmental norms to support women’s leadership.  Each STEM department head has endorsed this project strategy, as evidenced by their signatures on a Memorandum of Understanding that outlines their role in WISEST.

SUCCEED: Supporting UIC’s Commitment to a Community of Excellence, Equity and Diversity

Part of WISEST core mission is to engender change via training. Facilitators understand the power of gender schemas and the accumulation of disadvantage through a number of readings and trainings provided by scholars.  The SUCCEED initiative (Supporting UIC’s Commitment to a Community of Excellence, Equity and Diversity), over the years has developed a variety of training materials for search committees, and led numerous training sessions  for different search committees every year. Initially SUCCEED was composed of all 11 facilitators; currently, it is composed of a subgroup of facilitators. Deans of the College of Engineering and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences strongly encourage all search committee members to undergo training.

Please contact WISEST  if  your department is interested in search committee training, or in the materials that SUCCEED has developed.
